Every soap maker remembers their first lye calculator. It probably looked like a spreadsheet from 2004, because functionally it was one: pick your oils from a long list, type percentages, and get back a wall of numbers you were left to interpret on your own. Those tools taught a generation of us to make soap safely, and they deserve real respect for that. But somewhere between the tenth batch and the hundredth, most of us hit the same wall. The numbers were there. The understanding wasn't. Why is this bar's hardness low? What will this cost me per bar, and what should I charge? And the question that started this whole project for us: why is it still this hard (or ugly even) to hand a finished recipe to another person?

The Blnded Bliss Soap Calculator is our answer. It was built by Tom here at Blnded Bliss, somebody who also has a hand in making our soaps. We found most existing calculators are either bloated, or restrict the way we actually work. Our calculator started as a tool to streamline our own process. It grew into something we genuinely believe is the most complete free soap formulation tool you can open in a browser today. This article is the full tour: every feature, why it exists, and why it works differently.

Why we built our own calculator

Blnded Bliss is a small-batch tallow soap and skincare company. We formulate new bars constantly. For years that meant run the numbers in a classic calculator, screenshot or print the results, do the cost math on a phone calculator, hand-write the label ingredient list. If a friend wanted the recipe, we would need to photograph the notebook page or printout. Six tools for one recipe. That is just too much. 

The old tools weren't wrong. They were incomplete. They stopped at the numbers. So we built most of the workflow into one place, with a level of safety rigor we frankly wish we'd had as beginners.

Safety first lye math that refuses to guess

We have built in some safety features that should help with preventing miscalculations, and unsafe recipes. 

Some information about our safety checks:

  • Two-tier lye concentration alerts. Push your water low enough and the calculator warns you; push into genuinely dangerous concentration territory and it escalates to a hard, unmissable alert... including on the printed sheet, so the warning follows the recipe to your workbench.
  • Input sanity guards. Superfat is bounded to the 0-20% range where soap actually works (negative superfat means lye-heavy soap; the calculator explains why instead of just rejecting you outright). Soaping temperatures, and additives above typical safe usage, and water settings all get the same treatment: a plain-language explanation, not a silent error.
  • The 100% rule, everywhere. Recipes only calculate when your oils genuinely total 100%. Even mid-session tweaks like changing temperature, lye type, or additives after a calculation we need to re-verify before recomputing.
  • A printed reminder on every sheet: lye is caustic; verify every weight on your own scale before mixing. Always.

A complete formulation engine

Many oils, three lye modes, three water methods

The oil database spans everything from olive, coconut, tallow, lard, castor, shea to specialty butters, liquid waxes, and single fatty acids for advanced formulation. Lye support covers NaOH for bar soap, KOH for liquid soap (with a one-click 90% purity correction that matches the KOH flakes you can actually buy), and NaOH/KOH blends at any ratio for cream and shave soaps. Water can be specified the three ways: as a percentage of oils, as a target lye concentration, or as a water-to-lye ratio If you soap with milk, juice, or another split liquid, a secondary liquid line divides your water into a lye solution and a labeled second addition.

Soap qualities that explain themselves

Every calculation returns the seven classic soap quality numbers. The numbers are for hardness, cleansing, conditioning, bubbly lather, creamy lather, iodine, and INS and we show each against its recommended range. But here's the difference: when a quality falls outside its range, the calculator attempts to advise on how to fix it. You can see exactly where to look and what to change.

A real fatty acid profile

Under the qualities sits the chemistry that creates them: a full fatty acid breakdown which includes lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, oleic, ricinoleic, linoleic, linolenic and more. And when your blend includes an oil we haven't fully defined, the calculator says so, tells you what percentage of your blend the reading covers, and declines to overstate its confidence. It now prints on your recipe sheet too, so the chemistry travels with the paper.

Features old traditional calculators never implemented

Batch behavior predictions

Numbers describe a bar. They don't describe a pour. Our Batch Behavior engine predicts the three things that decide whether your session goes smoothly: trace speed, gel tendency, and overheat risk. These are scored against the conditions you actually plan to soap under. Your soaping temperature. Whether your fragrance is well-behaved, accelerating, or an unknown. Whether there's sugar, salt, or clay in the batch (dose-scaled by the actual gram amounts you enter, because a teaspoon of sugar and three tablespoons do not behave the same). Whether you plan to insulate the mold.

Each prediction comes with a plain English verdict, its top drivers, and concrete suggestions: soap cooler, skip the insulation, reach for a slower fragrance if you need swirl time. And every prediction carries a confidence level based on how much of your blend has we have data defined for.

A skin profile, by skin type

The Skin Profile engine reads your fatty acid makeup and translates it into what actually matters to the person holding the bar: cleansing strength, expected skin feel, shelf-life DOS (Dreaded Orange Spots) risk, and a suitability rating for sensitive, oily, dry, and normal/combination skin.

A recipe solver that's honest about tradeoffs

Tell the solver what you want such as harder, gentler, bubblier, or more conditioning and it proposes blends from your goals. When goals genuinely pull against each other (gentle versus cleansing; big bubbles versus dense cream), it says so and shows you the best balance. Usage caps for specialty oils like castor and beeswax are built in, so it never proposes a blend an experienced maker would wince at.

Substitution suggestions with an impact preview

Out of an oil? Every oil row has a substitute finder. It ranks stand-ins by real similarity and checks fatty acid profile first, soap qualities second, saponification value third. It shows you a match percentage with an honest preview: exactly which of the seven qualities move, whether any leave (or enter!) their recommended range, how much your lye amount changes, and, if you've priced your oils, whether the swap is cheaper or pricier per ounce. Oils that would exceed their safe usage cap at your percentage get flagged before you commit. One tap applies the swap and recalculates through the full safety pipeline so nothing is ever swapped silently.

Side by side recipe comparison

Pick any two recipes you have saved or purchased from us, and get a full side by side view of every oil with difference highlighted. It shows all inputs, all seven qualities with in-range status, behavior predictions, skin profiles, and batch cost. A difference counter tells you at a glance how far apart two recipes really are (or confirms your "new" version is practically identical to the old one). 

Made for makers who sell their soap, just like us

Batch cost, cost per bar, and suggested pricing

If you enter your supplier prices, every batch shows a full materials breakdown. It will also show cost per bar from your mold and bar weight, and a suggested selling price from your target margin or markup, with projected batch revenue and profit. Multi-cavity mold support means the per-bar math matches how you actually pour. If anything is unpriced, the calculator says the total is partial.

INCI labels, generated

The calculator produces a weight-ordered cosmetic ingredient list the way labels actually work: oils appear as their saponified salt names (Sodium Tallowate, Sodium Cocoate), superfat shows as botanical INCI names, essential oils map to their individual INCI identities, and fragrance oils are handled distinctly with an EU allergen reminder for makers selling into stricter european markets. It's presented honestly as a verified starting point for your label, with the legal caveats a real cosmetic label deserves. You may have to still edit the generated label.

Print sheets and full PDF reports

The print view is a clean, workbench-ready sheet: recipe summary, qualities with drivers, fatty acid profile, INCI list, your written method, and the safety notices. The PDF export goes further: a complete multi-page report with your method and notes, quality summary with explanations, behavior predictions, skin profile, and batch cost, paginated and dated. Hand it to a customer, file it with your batch records, or attach it to a wholesale pitch.

Sharing is the whole point

This is where the project's heart is. We built this because we wanted to share our process with other makers, and let them share theirs as well.

  • Share links. One click produces a URL that carries your entire recipe inside the link, even your notes. The person opening it needs no account, no app, no download. The recipe simply appears in their calculator, ready to make.
  • QR codes. That same share link renders as a scannable QR code privately in your browser. Print it on a batch card, drop it in a workshop handout, or let a friend scan your screen across the table.
  • Portable YAML files. Export any recipe as a clean, human-readable file. You can drag your YAML file back onto the calculator to import it. Your recipes are yours, in a format you can read, archive, and email forever.
  • Cloud recipe storage. A free account syncs your recipe library across devices, and your saved list handles growth gracefully. You have instant search access across everything you've ever saved, with clean pagination when your collection gets larger.
  • Batch logging. Record real pours against a recipe and track what changed between batches, with notes that autosave as you type.

Honesty as a feature

Here is a major difference between our calculator and other ones... This calculator tells you what it doesn't know. Predictions carry confidence levels. Partially characterized blends get coverage notes instead of false precision. Unpriced ingredients make the cost read "partial" instead of wrong. Conflicting solver goals produce an explained compromise instead of a fantasy. We built it this way because we use it this way for our batches. A formulation tool earns trust by being honest at the edges, and honesty at the edges is exactly where older tools went quiet.

Frequently asked questions

Is the calculator free?

Yes. Formulating is free with no signup. Saving, printing, exporting, and sharing unlock with an email address, and this creates a free store account adds cloud recipe storage across devices, and tied to your account.

How accurate is the lye math?

Every oil carries verified SAP values for both NaOH and KOH, and the calculator will refuse to compute anything with a missing value. Concentration alerts warn you before you mix a dangerously strong lye solution. As with any tool, always verify weights on your own scale and remember that lye is caustic.

Can I share recipes with other makers?

Yes, we full encourage you to use share links that carry the whole recipe, QR codes, or our portable YAML files. Recipients need nothing but the link or the file.

Does it handle liquid soap and dual-lye recipes?

Yes: NaOH, KOH with a 90% purity correction, and NaOH/KOH blends at any ratio.
